Steam Flaking
Steam Flaking
Ferrell-Ross steam flaking mills are built the way durable equipment should be—honest, heavy, and made to last a lifetime. Every component reflects decades of experience in some of the toughest processing environments in North America.
Feature & Function
Pin Feeder – Built for Steady, Reliable Flow
As grain enters the mill, it passes through a stainless-steel pin feeder—engineered to withstand years of steam, heat, and heavy use without backing down. Powered by an SCR drive, the feeder delivers smooth, even-flow feeding that keeps roll loads consistent and flake quality dependable.
Beneath the feeder sits a stainless steam vent plenum. Vented out the back, it continually releases steam, allowing the system to breathe properly. This steady venting helps maintain stable temperatures and contributes to the consistent, uniform flakes Ferrell-Ross mills are known for.
Heavy-Duty Housing & Frame – Strength That Shows
The flaking mill housing is made from thick, durable stainless steel built to stand up to constant moisture and punishing steam-flaking conditions. Beneath the housing is our FEA-engineered frame—constructed from heavy plate steel and machined flat to reduce vibration and increase machine stability.
A strong frame isn’t just about durability—it extends roll life, protects internal components, and increases the time between roll changes. That means fewer shutdowns and more time producing high-quality flakes.
Bearings, Rolls & Pressure System – Engineered for Longevity
Each roll is supported by double-row spherical roller bearings housed in either cast iron or plate steel, depending on customer preference. These bearings distribute load pressure evenly while minimizing friction and heat—key factors in achieving long service life.
Roll pressure is maintained through an air-over-hydraulic pump and accumulator system. The pump provides the consistent pressure needed to maintain flake quality, while the accumulators act as shock absorbers—protecting the mill when foreign material passes through.
As the product exits the rolls, it passes by a custom stainless alloy scraper designed to keep the roll surface clean and ensure uniform flakes with every turn.
Drivetrain & Rolls – Power with Purpose
Ferrell-Ross steam flakers are driven by a dual-motor HTD belt system for dependable, balanced power delivery. The rolls themselves are crafted from premium chilled cast iron with high-grade steel alloy journals—materials selected for hardness, durability, and the ability to take pressure without compromise.
